online tranarchy

refuse to be regulated

the online world is now just as important to perform tranarchy in than the world outside of your front door. queerness is frequently censored and information restricted. it is imperative that you learn how to circumvent the system

vpns

how do they work / what are they

vpn means 'virtual private network'. it is a program that redirects your internet so that your internet service provider (the company that you pay for internet) cant track what you do

why do i need one

vpns provide several benefits

how do i get one

most vpns are paid services. different companies offer different benefits (ability to use the vpn on multiple devices, faster connection speeds, etc) but some companies are just as bad as isps and will sell your data

vpns with good reputations include mullvad and amnezia but always do your own research and be familiar with your countrys internet laws

this website has a very good rundown of everything you need to know about vpns and torrenting

onion browsers

what is 'tor'

you have probably heard of the 'dark web' or 'deep web'. these are places that clear net browsers (like google and firefox) cannot access. 'dark web' is often used to describe websites where you can access illegal material along the lines of drugs, hitmen, and child exploitation. this is not untrue but the 'deep web' (where the 'dark web' can be found) is a much broader descriptor.

the deep web is a place with little to no censorship and is a helpful place to be familiar with.

as mentioned you cant use a standard web browser to access the deep web and will need to download a tor browser. it functions like any other web browser but has a built in vpn and allows you to access the deep web

websites that are only available on the deep web cant just be searched for like you would on google. these websites have randomly generated urls that end with .onion meaning that you have to first find a deep web directory with direct links to these sites

troll around until you find a useful directory. older directories like the deep web wiki are often defunct but are still good places to start

even though tor has its own vpn, it is a good idea to have your own vpn first and to make sure you have decent antivirus software. despite the benefits of the deep web having limited censorship, it still means there is an extra risk when using it

age restrictions

they impact us all

if you live in 'australia' or similar countries, you will probably be aware of attempts by our governments to stop minors from accessing the full internet.

while the intention of protecting kids from pedophiles or groomers or from seeing harmful content may have merit, age restrictions online ultimately result in all of us losing our right to privacy.

every other week there are news reports on previously trusted websites being hacked and having sensitive user information stolen, but now we are meant to be giving facebook, youtube, and discord our government ids? this is dangerous for us all

using vpns and onion browsers can help circumvent these restrictions by choosing a server location in a country that doesnt have these restrictions, but it is not a perfect system
